CHAPTER FOUR

The rest of the day was basically shot after that.

No way I was leaving after he’d actually showed back up. That surprised me, and worried me. I would’ve laid money that he would have sent Thomas back around. Which made me wonder...why had he come by himself? After calming down the girls, I took a look outside, trying to see if I’d missed something. Could he have brought Thomas with him? Maybe he was supposed to be covering him from afar, and something had gone wrong. Or maybe Travis really just was either that pissed or that stupid that he thought he could come over here and successfully intimidate all five of us. It probably would’ve worked if it had just been Jessica or Lara, no offense to them, they were tough in their own ways, but not Hannah or Susan or myself.

God, obviously not Hannah.

She obviously had a lot of grit and wasn’t the type to back down. If anything, she was too aggressive. Although there was a lot of stock in having guts and standing up for yourself, there was an art to it. If you took it too far you might piss someone off or freak them out, and get yourself shot. Intimidation was more subtle than it seemed.

After securing the area, I told the ladies what I’d found out there. Hannah had wanted to go on with my plan, but relented when she saw how afraid and anxious Lara and Jessica were at the thought of the two of us leaving for several hours. So she cooled it. I stayed in for the rest of the day, taking some time to work out, (Jessica made me realize that I should really pick the habit back up, I’d been slacking recently), reading a sci-fi novel from Susan’s collection, and eventually making dinner. By the time we were all sitting around the table to eat, the mood was a lot more jovial, which was good to see. Honestly, that was a big indicator.

I wouldn’t say that I came from a broken home, but my parents were prone to prolonged bouts of anger. It was the kind of anger that could last all day, or even all week if they were pissed enough. And that was when you found yourself walking on eggshells. Anything would set them off, and then it was getting yelled at, or lectured about something that hadn’t been a problem until right now, or they’d suddenly remember something I’d done that had pissed them off last month, but they’d let slide at the time because they were in a good mood, and bring it back up for no good reason. Or they’d scream at each other.

I hated those days.

I hated that oppressive atmosphere, how tense we all were, how unhappy we all were. And I had a few friends who had parents like that. Man, nothing was more embarrassing than having to watch your friend’s parents fight, or yell at them. It got so
